As the Director of Business Development, you will lead strategic growth initiatives across our consulting services portfolio, with a focus on the midstream and retail segments of the energy industry. You will be responsible for originating, shaping, and closing new logo opportunities to drive Novus’ growth objectives. Based in Houston, you will bring deep familiarity with the regional energy landscape and a track record of consultative selling within the oil and gas industry.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the top-of-the-funnel where you will own outbound prospecting, early relationships building, opportunity qualification and deal progression within priority accounts. You will work in tandem with Marketing, Client Account Leads, Partners, and Service Line Owners to convert high-potential prospects into new customers for Novus. Key Responsibilities
New Logo Origination & Pipeline Generation
- Target, identify, and penetrate priority new logo accounts aligned with Novus’ market focus and growth strategy.
- Develop and execute account plans for targeted prospects, including outbound engagement strategies.
- Create and maintain a robust pipeline of potential clients and opportunities.
- Monitor market trends, client needs, and competitive positioning to inform business development priorities and anticipate needs and timing windows for origination.
- Expand executive networks in target markets through events and associations.
Pursuit Strategy & Deal Progression
- Shape early-stage deal strategy with the Novus leadership team.
- Frame business problems strategically, and leverage Novus capabilities and partnerships to craft solutions aligned to the prospective client’s value drivers.
- Lead collaborative sales opportunities with System Integrators and Technology Partners to accelerate pipeline creation and increase win probability.
- Partner with Marketing on prospect targeting, campaign execution, and event-driven lead generation for named accounts.
Relationship Management
- Develop and maintain relationships with key decision-makers at prospective and existing clients.
- Lead client engagement efforts from initial contact through proposal development and contract negotiation.
- Collaborate with account leads and team members to ensure a seamless transition from business development to service delivery.
- Identify risks proactively and implement mitigation strategies.
Consultation & Solution Development
- Serve as a trusted advisor, translating client challenges into tailored consulting solutions.
- Work closely with service team leadership to understand the Novus offerings and match them to potential client needs.
- Prepare and present proposals, service agreements, pricing plans and statements of work to potential clients.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business or related field
- 8-15 years of progressive experience in consulting, professional services, or enterprise solutions business development experience
- Demonstrated experience and network within oil and gas midstream (pipeline, storage, transportation, processing) and/or retail (marketing, distribution, convenience retail) segments
- History of consistently meeting or exceeding revenue targets and successfully closing complex, high-value consulting engagements
- High outbound activity, rigor, and discipline in territory and named account penetration
- Strong relationship-led selling approach with consultative discovery, value articulation, and executive communication
- Demonstrated success owning quota and net-new pursuit generation (hunter mentality)
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial consulting environment with high autonomy and accountability
- Based in Houston, TX – strong preference for local candidates with an established Houston market presence
- Ability to travel up to 50%
