The Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia, (CANS), is a self-regulating industry association that manages curriculum, training, examination and certification processes, and monitors members' adherence to practice standards. Its membership numbers about 8,000. The Association is governed by a Board of Directors and managed by a staff headed by an Executive Director. CANS was facing challenges in its governance and management roles, and in planning for growth and improved service to its members.
CANS engaged Novus to diagnose and assess the governance and management roles and relationships, and administrative practices and systems. We then assisted the Board and administration in implementing our recommendations.
The Board developed new governance and management policies, prepared a strategic plan, clarified and re-defined Board/ management roles, responsibilities, developed a code of ethics, and revised the director nomination and election process. The membership supported the implementation process, which continued successfully and on schedule.
